Discover the magic in the Valley of Surprises. Sweeping from the rugged rainforest clad mountains of the Border Ranges down through villages and river flats of the Valley to the wide golden beaches at Evans Head, the Richmond valley awaits you. Central to the entire Northern Rivers region, the Richmond Valley offers a wonderful base for exploring the interesting nooks and crannies of the hinterland.

Evans Head, known as 'the Jewel of the Richmond Valley', is a peaceful seaside town ideal for a family getaway. It is a haven for the adventurer on the seas or some quiet estuaries. 'Evans' boasts one of the largest caravan parks in NSW, nestled between ocean beaches and river reaches. The surf break on the main beach is renowned for offering an experience for surfers at all levels. Try some whale watching from Razorback Lookout on Goanna Headland. This truly spiritual place is recognized as the 'Birthplace of the Bundjalung Nation' in local indigenous dreamtime mythology.

From Evans Head, stretching over 25 km south to Iluka is the Bundjalung National Park. From the northern end you can access the beach at Black Rocks camping ground, a fabulous opportunity for fishing and 4X4 beach driving. Explore the National Park via the many bushwalks or take a peaceful canoe trip along the Esk River, the most pristine coastal water system in the Northern Rivers.

At the heart of the Richmond Valley is the bustling town of Casino. Known as 'The Beef Capital' it boasts a relaxed friendly atmosphere and hosts the famous Beef Week celebrations in May. A key feature is the Beef on Barker food fair. Sample the delectable regional cuisine, from a scrumptious veal medallion with local olives and wine from the nearby Flood Reserve Vineyard. Casino also has a vibrant cultural community, the 'Jambama Artists' in the industrial estate is a must see, providing workspace for indigenous students while showcasing their art. Platypus Gallery at the Casino Visitor Information Centre is another new initiative showcasing regional art.

The Summerland Way

Casino is at the crossroads of the Bruxner Highway and 'Summerland Way'. This scenic route provides an alternative to the Pacific Highway between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane. Travelling the Summerland Way to Casino from Grafton you can stop off at Rappville and enjoy the warm hospitality of the historic country pub then continue through Casino and onto Kyogle, 'The Gateway to the Rainforests' where a visit to the community run Roxy Art Gallery is well worthwhile.

The Lions Road

Diverting off the Summerland Way and onto the Lions Road takes you over the New South Wales/Queensland border through beautiful rainforest. A lookout on the way provides spectacular views down the Richmond Valley over the Border Loop spiral railway. [For more on The Lions Road see p.35 of this publication.]

If this wets your appetite for adventure then why not take a tent and explore the many 4WD recreation parks of the Upper Clarence. Or take some time to rejuvenate at one of the many rural retreats and B&Bs sprinkled throughout the Richmond Valley.

From the magnificent vista of the Pacific Ocean, off Evans Head to the unique World Heritage listed national parks of the hinterland, the Richmond Valley offers a diverse range of attractions and activities. It is  indeed a valley of surprises.
